Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Signs Up Dave Bautista

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Signs Up Dave Bautista

There are just three stars attached to Denis Villeneuve’s new take on Dune so far, but each one of them is a reason to be pretty damn excited. The sci-fi epic currently has Timothée Chalamet in the lead as Paul Atreidas and the ever-brilliant Rebecca Ferguson on board as Lady Jessica – and the latest addition is no stranger to epic space-operas. According to Variety, man-mountain Dave Bautista – of Guardians of the Galaxy fame, and who previously turned up in Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 – is set to join the project when the cameras roll.

THR reports that Bautista will play Glossu “Beast” Rabban – the hulking older nephew of pustulant big-bad Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. In David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation, the role was played by Paul L. Smith.

It’s still early days for Villeneuve’s take on Frank Herbert’s classic novel. As well as directing, the filmmaker is on writing duties with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts – and it’s thought that their adaptation will span two movies. Considering the epic scope of the story, with its deep, dense universe of desert planets and extensive galactic dynasties, and the difficulty that even seasoned filmmakers have had in bringing Dune to the screen before, that could be a wise choice. With Villeneuve’s track record for creating big, bold, visionary sci-fi (see Arrival and Blade Runner 2049), this is one to await with baited breath.
